1st XV vs Bognor

11 Jan 2025

New Milton were left rueing the fine margins after a disallowed try from captain Jack Corbett left the relegation-battling side empty-handed after a 27-20 loss to Bognor on Saturday.

At the end of a scrappy match with many frustrating moments for each side, Bognor were hanging on by their fingernails against a New Milton side that never gave up throughout the contest.

After some early Bognor attacks, New Milton took the initiative and pressurised Bognor deep inside their half. At first, the defence held, but at the expense of a penalty in front of the posts, with the home side accepting an easy three points off the boot of Dalton Thomas.

It took 15 minutes before Bognor came to life, with George Castleton feeding Billy Toone from the back of a dominant scrum. The scrum-half passed to Sid Lewis, who ran clean through the middle for the first try.

New Milton immediately responded when they took advantage of some sloppy defensive work and fly-hacked through, with Jack Corbett collecting the ball to score their first try, which Thomas converted.

Both sides had chances to score their second try, but Bognor speedster Connor Herrington raced clear to touch down the next try before Ollie Mitchell touched down from an effective driving line-out as the match passed the half-hour mark.

Bognor skipper Charlie Jays crossed for Bognor’s bonus-point try on the stroke of half-time to secure a 12-point lead, and there was real fear among the New Milton ranks that the floodgates might open in the second half.

However, New Milton had other ideas, immediately regaining the initiative straight from the restart. After a few near misses, including a disallowed try from Corbett that was chalked off for an unknown reason, they eventually gained their just desserts by scoring their second try and reducing the deficit to seven points when Hangil Chung crossed the line.

An impressive clearance from Jack Hornibrook set the platform for skipper Jays to score his second try from a driving line-out, but New Milton’s Jude Payne hit back to have the final say and to achieve a well-earned bonus point.
